Dina and her son, Norberto, heard about the Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County Partner Family program from her own family. She had watched her cousin go through the process successfully and become a homeowner. Dina had a challenging upbringing, and did not have the opportunity to grow up with her mother and have a stable home life. She lived in California, then Boston, then eventually settled in Westfield. She promised herself that when she became a mother, she would provide a better home for her child.
At one point in Dina and Norberto’s life, they were living in a shelter as well as a motel. Dina and Norberto have discussed how one of the worst parts during that period was that they were forced to live off canned food and cereal because they were not allowed to cook in the places where they stayed. During one of our conversations with Dina, she whispered how she would sneak in a hotplate to have warm food for her son. As Dina speaks about her son, you can see the abundance of love she has for him. The Vargas family will move into their home in Noblesville this summer. They are looking forward to getting involved in their new community, having friends over and enjoying a safe neighborhood for Norberto to ride his bike.
