So I found it a bit ironic that a few years ago, I became involved with an organization that builds houses for those in need. Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County does a great job of helping residents in our county achieve their dream of safe, affordable housing. And they use a lot of tools to build those homes! I found myself wondering how I could help without having to stand on a ladder and swing a hammer.

The most impactful experience with the organization was one I won’t soon forget. I attended a home dedication and was genuinely surprised at the beautiful craftsmanship, detail and overall quality of the home. It was amazing to me that volunteers helped to build such a great house.

The thing that I remember most is the reaction of the recipients of the house - a mom and her son - when they received the keys to the front door. Seeing their tears of joy and sharing in their dream of homeownership was powerful. They themselves had put in hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” in their home. This made me pause for a moment. If they were able to help build a house then I could too! When I asked how they had volunteered, I learned that there are many ways one can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity without swinging a hammer.

It’s easy to get involved and there is something for everyone. If you have a truck, there is always a need to pick up donations for Habitat’s ReStore. They also need individuals to spend a few hours in the ReStore. If you’re not familiar with the ReStore, check it out here.

Want to be out on the job site, but don’t want to use tools? Providing a snack to the workers is an easy way to help the building process. There are a number of volunteer teams and committees that you can join as well. Committees include public relations, family selection, marketing and development, faith relations, resource development, and finance.

Like inside office work? If so, considering volunteering in the organization’s Westfield office by answering phones, filing and helping with other general office work. If social media is your passion, become part of our creative social media team.  There is also a need for Spanish language translation. There truly is a place for volunteers from all walks of life at Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County.

Volunteering is a great way to use your talents and meet new people. Consider bringing your corporate, faith, or community group together to help a family in need secure safe, affordable housing.
